What to Look for During Hurricane Season

10/16/2023 (Permalink)

During hurricane season, it's crucial to be vigilant and proactive in protecting your home. Keep a close eye on weather forecasts and official warnings that come to you via the news or to your weather apps. There's a lot you can do to fully prepare if a hurricane is on its way to your area. SERVPRO of Aberdeen Holmdel can not only help with the storm damage restoration, but we're here to provide you with some information on what you can do to protect your home.

Prepare an Emergency Kit

An emergency kit for hurricane preparedness should contain essential supplies to sustain you and your family for several days in case of a hurricane or its aftermath. Here's some items you should include:

  • Water and non-perishable food
  • First aid kit
  • Personal hygiene items
  • Flashlights
  • Blankets and sleeping bags
  • Clothing
  • Important documents
  • Cash
  • Pet supplies
  • Baby supplies
  • Medications and any other specialty items

For Preparing the Structure of Your Home

It's not a bad idea to grab some plywood and board up your windows in case the hurricane that is headed your way is supposed to be bad. This will protect your windows from breaking and also prevent water from seeping in causing water damage to the floors, walls, belongings, and ceilings of your home.

It's also important to grab sandbags to put around the perimeter of your home to deter water away from the foundation. Any standing water that hangs out around the perimeter of your home can cause water damage to the foundation, creating further damage to the structure and resulting in basement flooding.

Clearing gutters and drains to avoid flooding is something you should think of doing beforehand as well, as if your gutters are blocked with leaves and debris, water will have no where to go but down, causing a flood around your home.

Ensure that your doors and windows are sealed correctly to prevent damage, as water can find a way through any seal that isn't fully equipped. Also, it's crucial to have your roof checked. If your roof isn't sturdy and the high winds and rains hit your home, you'll be dealing with a lot more than missing shingles.

As far as the trees and elements on your property, it's smart to have your trees looked at to ensure that they are healthy and sturdy enough to withstand strong winds. And, if you have patio furniture, potted plants, etc. outside, it's best to put them away where they cannot take flight and damage part of your home.

Storm Damage Restoration

As you know, New Jerseyans have seen some of the worst storm systems crash through our region and leave destruction in their path. Our proximity to the ocean and other significant bodies of water can make for substantially cold winters and fierce, stormy summers almost every year. We offer a comprehensive restoration solution encompassing nearly every need that your Holmdel property might have after structural breaches or subsequent floods.

Emergency services often come before the full inspection and assessment of the property. They exist to reduce the immediate threats to the house and its occupants from compromised construction materials, standing water, or other hazards. Some of the most common emergency services our SERVPRO team offers are:

  • Extraction services
  • Content management and relocation
  • Controlled demolition of sagging or damaged structural elements
  • Temporary construction solutions for roof and window breaches

Water Damage Restoration

Storm damage restoration and water damage restoration kind of go hand-in-hand. We understand the level of care and consideration that your property needs to inspire you to be a lifelong customer. With water loss incidents, we are on the clock to reduce property damage through many direct approaches, including:

  • Extraction with submersible pumps
  • Controlled demolition to access damaged areas
  • Specialty drying equipment for moisture extraction
  • Content management to remove at-risk belongings from the damaged areas

No matter how severe water damages can begin, the longer the customer waits for a response to the emergency, the worse the situation can get. We can reach Holmdel and Aberdeen losses quickly to begin emergency services and mitigation tactics. We can actively reduce property loss in these threatening scenarios by staying prepared. For our SERVPRO teams, this means:

Stocking trailers with extractors, air movers, and other recovery tools
Encouraging our entire roster to obtain their water restoration accreditation through the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification
Staffing a 24/7 response line with real people to begin collecting vital information about your loss to help our responding technicians.
