Why Two Minutes Make a Difference in a Fire

10/7/2021 (Permalink)

Did you know two minutes can make a difference between life and death if a fire starts in your home? As research shows, people may have as little as two minutes to escape a home fire before it's too late, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

The best way to protect yourself and your home from fire damage is to identify and remove fire hazards, and have a fire escape plan.

Fire Safety Tips to Protect You and Your Home

Nearly 60 percent of house fire deaths occur in homes with no working smoke alarms. During a fire, having working smoke alarms and a fire escape plan that's been practiced regularly can save lives and your home.

  • Install smoke alarms on every level of your home, inside bedrooms and outside sleeping areas.
  • Test smoke alarms every month. If they’re not working, change the batteries.
  • Talk with all family members about a fire escape plan and practice the plan twice a year. Include two ways out of every room ( usually a door and a window), with a clear path to an outside meeting place (like a tree, light pole or mailbox) that’s a safe distance from the home.
  • If a fire occurs in your home, GET OUT, STAY OUT, and CALL FOR HELP. Never go back inside for anything or anyone.
