Commercial Mold Problems

5/10/2023 (Permalink)

If you own a commercial building and you’ve noticed a musty odor but can’t seem to locate the source, chances are there could be mold. Whether it’s moisture entering the building from a leaky roof or visible black mold spreading on the ceiling, the team at SERVPRO Aberdeen/Holmdel can come out to mitigate and remediate the problem.

What Causes Mold?
Mold will grow in places with a lot of moisture, such as around leaks in roofs, windows, or pipes, or where there has been flooding. Mold grows well on paper products, cardboard ceiling tiles, and wood products. Mold can also grow in dust, paints, wallpaper, insulation, drywall, carpet, fabric, and upholstery.

Seven Facts About Mold
Here are some facts that are beneficial for you to know about mold:

  1. Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  2. Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air. They may enter your business through windows, doors, or air conditioning or heating systems and can even hitch a ride on your clothing.
  3. Mold spores thrive on moisture.
  4. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water.
  5. Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed to discourage the mold from returning.
  6. Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead to possible health concerns.
  7. The best way to keep mold from thriving indoors is to keep humidity levels below 45%.

What To Do/Not To Do
If you see visible mold, do not disturb it. You can inadvertently spread the mold infestation throughout your building. When mold is disturbed, the mold can release microscopic spores which become airborne and can circulate inside the building.

What to do: Stay out of affected areas, turn off HVAC systems and fans, contact SERVPRO of Aberdeen/Holmdel for mold remediation services.

What not to do: Don’t touch or disturb the mold, don’t blow air across any surfaces with visible or suspected mold growth, don’t attempt to dry the area yourself, and don’t spray bleach or other disinfectants on the mold.

About Our Mold Remediation Services
We specialize in mold cleanup and restoration. Our crews are highly trained restoration professionals that use specialized equipment and techniques to properly remediate your mold problem quickly and safely.

If you’re encountering mold or believe there might be mold in your building due to experiencing any signs, call us. We’ll be there to help.

What Causes Commercial Water Damage?

12/20/2021 (Permalink)

Many business owners picture water damage being the result of a serious storm flooding offices, knocking down power lines, and shutting down business for days. While it's true that most commercial water damage is caused by flooding from weather events, there are several other sources that can create major problems for a business.

Common Causes of Water Damage in Commercial Buildings

Malfunctioning sprinkler systems

Outdated sprinkler systems in older office buildings and retail stores usually work in conjunction with fire protection systems. While these sprinklers help in a fire emergency, they can also cause commercial flood damage to inventory and property if they malfunction or require replacement.

Broken plumbing and pipes

Just like a home, plumbing systems and pipes need to be maintained in the workplace to avoid a breakdown or emergency.

Faulty appliances and equipment

Businesses like restaurants and catering facilities that use water appliances regularly run the risk of flood damage. If the equipment fails at any time, especially after hours, you may find yourself facing a water emergency.

Backed-up sewer lines

If the sewer line to your building backs up or gets damaged, contaminated Black Water can arise, causing health issues and ruining products and office furnishings.

SERVPRO of Aberdeen/Holmdel Can Fix Water Damage

No matter how severe your commercial water losses are, the professionals at SERVPRO of Aberdeen/Holmdel are trained and ready to make it, "Like it never even happened."

Water Issues to Look for Inside Your Commercial Building

11/2/2020 (Permalink)

Water issues, such as clogged pipes and leaky plumbing can affect any commercial building. And worse, you may not even know there’s a problem until it’s too late. With multiple people and larger systems, the risk of escalation is very real, and you need to stay on top of maintenance and inspections to prevent it.

If you are or want to become a commercial property owner, here are a three common water issues you might run into.

1.Clogged Pipes

Designed to move large amounts wastewater through a building, pipes are built strong to resist damage. Unfortunately, soap, hair, oil, and other contents can accumulate over time and overwhelm the pipes. Even tree roots can cause sewer water to block the system if it’s running underground. If you notice diminished water pressure or a toilet backup, there’s a good chance your pipes are clogged.

2.System Leaks

Commercial property plumbing is complex, which inevitably leads to leaking pipes, faucets, and toilets. These systems have vulnerable spots wear down, deteriorate, and cause larger malfunctions and property damage. Leaks are also a sign of larger plumbing problems, which can be fixed by a plumbing technician, if discovered early enough.

3.Plumbing Damage

Along with unaddressed leaks and excessive clogs, high pressure inside the plumbing system during winter can lead to a broken pipe. Other culprits include tree-root growth, poor maintenance and age-related corrosion.

Schedule proper maintenance and contact professionals if you or your tenants detect leaks and other issues.

If you’re facing an emergency involving water issues inside your commercial building, don’t let a minute pass by. Call the professionals at SERVPRO of Aberdeen/Holmdel at (732) 290-3170 and put our experts to work.

What Happens If My Fire Sprinklers Turn on Accidentally?

6/17/2020 (Permalink)

Installing a fire sprinkler system at your business was an easy decision. You trust this will save your property and potentially your life in an emergency. But what happens in the case of accidental activation? Will you have to deal with the process of water damage cleanup or worse, property damage?

Fortunately, all the sprinklers in your building won’t activate at once, rather, only in rooms where a high temperature triggers a response. Although rare, if an accidental activation occurs act fast to prevent secondary water damage.

  • If a sprinkler accidentally goes off, turn off the main water source.
  • Contact SERVPRO for containment and water damage cleanup We’ll ask several questions regarding your emergency to determine what equipment and resources to bring, including how many trained SERVPRO professionals may be needed.
  • Call your insurance agent and inquire whether this event is covered in your policy.

Keep Sprinkler System Up to Code

While it’s true that indoor fire sprinklers can accidentally activate, dumping gallons of water into your building and requiring restoration services, you can prevent it.

The National Fire Protection Association sets codes and standards for sprinklers and installation. These codes require that new construction commercial buildings be fitted with a sprinkler system. If you have an older building, a trained contractor can retrofit the system at your property.

  • Prevent accidental activation by properly maintaining the sprinkler system to code.
  • Regularly inspect the sprinklers for leaks and the pipes for adequate pressure.

If you’re facing an emergency involving water damage cleanup, don’t let a minute pass by. Call the professionals at SERVPRO of Aberdeen/Holmdel at (732) 290-3170 and put our restoration services to work.

What to Do After a Fire at Your Place of Business

6/17/2020 (Permalink)

There are plenty of safety considerations to address when thinking of the safety of your business, staff and visitors. But do you know what to do after a fire? This is one area you need to spend some time planning for and working to prevent.

Fire Disasters Can Happen at the Office

The NFPA estimates that from 2007–2011, U.S. fire departments responded to an average of 3,340 fires in office properties per year, which were responsible for an annual average of four deaths, 44 injuries and $112 million in direct property damage. Those are some staggering statistics.

In the event of a business fire, cleanup and restoration take time. Fortunately, SERVPRO has advanced training in restoration techniques, and the experience and specialized equipment to quickly restore your property.

Keep your business safe during this process with the following three tips.

  1. Avoid Repeat Fire Disasters

If a fire starts at your place of business, you should turn to the local fire department to help you put it out. While your efforts may work in stopping the fire from spreading, a fire crew can help you find the cause of the fire. Determining the cause is the best way to prevent further fire damage from occurring or reoccurring. If a small fire occurs, you may need to look for the cause yourself. Start by doing the following:

  • Unplug or turn off electrical devices in the area
  • Turn off surrounding heat sources
  • Shut off gas supply to prevent the fire from spreading
  1. Defend against the elements.

Once fire cleanup has begun, protect your building from the outside elements to prevent further losses. In the fall and winter months, roof damage should be secured with a tarp to keep rain, hail, and snow from permeating the building. In warmer months, tarping or boarding up openings can keep rodents and birds from nesting inside of the facility.

  1. Secure the facility

Depending on the severity of the commercial fire, your business may be susceptible to looting. If the fire damage leaves your building with unsecured openings, you may need to hire a disaster response company to keep vandals and thieves from entering the premises.

Your Best Guide to Commercial Water Removal in Holmdel

3/31/2020 (Permalink)

Make sure to contact SERVPRO if your gym has water damage. Our certified team will respond quickly to your emergency. We are standing by 24/7.

Commercial Water Removal in Holmdel Averts Major Damage in Gym

A local gym had a pipe break overnight in a wall, and the softening of the sheetrock caused a row of mounted mirrors to come down into the wet floor that needed commercial water removal. When the manager arrived to open the doors for members for the day, she walked into a mess.

After shutting off the water to the gym, she called for commercial water removal in Holmdel from SERVPRO. The techs arrived quickly to begin the cleanup and get the gym ready to reopen as fast as possible.

Cleaning the Floors

The techs scoped the facility and determined an accurate scale of the water loss using their moisture detection equipment. The wall the mirrors came down from had a large amount of water wicked within the sheetrock. The techs swept away the broken mirrors and used their portable pumps to pull up the remaining water. The RubberTrax carpet used throughout the gym did not absorb water. However, water ran underneath in the vicinity of the pipe break, and the carpet squares needed removal to dry the slab substrate underneath. The techs took the rubber carpet squares to another area for drying and disinfection so they could get reused and save the owner the cost of replacement. The sheetrock where the mirrors hung needed removal, and this action opened up the wall cavities for drying.

Drying and Disinfection

Gym members have an expectation that the place they work out is clean and sanitary. The techs have drying equipment that blows air at such a high velocity; it causes embedded moisture in the concrete slab flooring to rise. Once that happens, the dehumidifiers capture it.

The cycle continues and rapidly drops the air moisture content in the loss area. The techs set drying goals for healthy air quality levels and monitor the drying process carefully to ensure they get attained.

Afterward, they use their professional-grade cleaning solutions to wipe down the affected areas with antibacterial agents to leave the surfaces clean and sanitary for use.

SERVPRO of Aberdeen / Holmdel at (732) 290-3170 stands ready to help local businesses with commercial water removal. With their advanced training and professional equipment, the techs make the loss, "Like it never even happened."

We Get You Back In Business In Holmdel After A Mold Damage Disaster

12/27/2019 (Permalink)

We isolate areas affected by mold using physical barriers and a negative air pressure chamber.

Managing Commercial Mold Damage Remediation in Your Holmdel Factory

The musty odor in your Holmdel factory might indicate a microbial infestation. These microbes live in damp conditions, depending on air currents to establish new colonies. Underneath large pieces of equipment, inside coat closets, or below breakroom sinks give microbes enclosed areas rich in cellulose and other food sources. While microbes exist on almost every surface, including just-cleaned ones, they do not usually cause a problem unless certain conditions exist in their immediate environment.

SERVPRO's remediation experts can help you manage the situation that lead to your Holmdel factory's commercial mold damage situation. Mold is one of the most prolific microbes on Earth. Cleaning surfaces can actually spread mold by causing it to release spores into the air. We use specialized methods to trap the mold and its spores, so new colonies do not have a chance to start.

Our building services team does the same with your HVAC units and ducts. Once we clean your ventilation system's components, hidden microbes cannot get whisked out and into the air, nor start to grow inside the system itself. HEPA-grade filters do prevent spores from traveling far, which is why we use them in our equipment. We change out filers in your system or clean non-disposable ones for you.

When mold damage affects a particular area, we often construct a temporary chamber. We do this to protect other areas from the spores that often release into the air. Using an air scrubber, we can create a negative pressure that prevents microbes from escaping while still allowing clean air to enter the area.

Air and its circulation helps speed up the desiccation of damp areas, making it more difficult for microbes like mold to thrive. Temperature changes do little to prevent mold, and does little to help remediate it from any specific area. Higher temps can make drying out damp areas happen more swiftly, however, so we might choose to use heated air to dry out materials as rapidly as possible. Keeping the interior of your factory arid after we finish mold damage remediation might require desiccant machinery, which we can help install for you.

When your factory in Hazlet, Matawan, or Keyport needs mold damage remediation and prevention, call SERVPRO of Aberdeen / Holmdel at (732) 290-3170. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster, and always ready to help.

We Get You Back In Business In Holmdel After Water Damage Hits

11/3/2019 (Permalink)

We have extensive inventory of advanced equipment to grapple with your commercial water damage. Call us right away, we are ready 24/7.

The Inconveniences Involved in Commercial Water Removal in Affected Holmdel Retail Stores

Whether water spills during peak hours when your retail store is teaming with people or during off-hours when no one is around, the incident can lead to several inconveniences. Apart from the need to extract inches of standing water, there is also debris to remove and soiled areas to clean. To address the inconveniences, including minimizing or eliminating the need to close the business, you should involve a professional team that handles commercial water removal.

Various factors can affect the outcome of commercial water removal exercises in Holmdel. Reaction time can be faster during peak hours since someone is likely to notice water flowing in unexpected areas immediately, unlike a spill that happens when the store is closed. Despite the quick reaction, coordination is necessary to get people out and remove the water conveniently. Our SERVPRO teams can help in many ways, including arriving quickly at the loss site and isolating the affected areas. We also have safety gear, such as wet floor signs to caution customers and staff about affected areas preventing accidents.

A burst pipe or other source can dump thousands of gallons of water into the property within a matter of minutes. Removing that water can be a tedious process, especially if the affected area is deep inside a big building. Our SERVPRO crews expect to encounter such situations, so we bring enough equipment and accessories to the loss site. We have assorted pumps, including submersible and truck-mounted ones. We also have long hoses and other accessories to manage the extraction.

Apart from stagnant water, water spills also leave wet materials and even moisture in the air. Removing such moisture can be difficult, especially when the wet material is concealed behind other materials. For example, reaching wet insulation requires the removal of wall panels. Our SERVPRO technicians handle such steps tearing down water damage affected areas and rebuilding them once all moisture is gone.

Most of the tasks involved in water removal are tedious. Call SERVPRO of Aberdeen / Holmdel at (732) 290-3170 to help dry all moisture from the incident, "Like it never even happened."

SERVPRO Works Hard and Fast to Keep Your Holmdel Business Operational During a Water Damaging Event

Drying Flooring and Equipment in a Holmdel Gym

Depending on the impact of exercises and the traffic that your Holmdel gym receives, the type of flooring that gets chosen has a direct impact on your clients. Rubber flooring options provide some impact resistance for the joints of gymgoers but might have issues when exposed to standing water and high moisture conditions. Our professionals have a fast and knowledgeable response to protect this flooring option as well as much of your equipment in this damaged area.

Rubber gym flooring rolls might often resist water damage to Holmdel gyms, but this fact alone may result in more harm than help for your business. The flooring's inability to absorb any of the pooling or migrating water can help this threat to move throughout other areas of the facility quickly.  This can affect other fixtures and equipment far more susceptible to moisture damage and standing water. Protecting motorized units like treadmills, ellipticals, and other powered machines begin with trusting our SERVPRO team to eliminate any standing water and begin drying efforts quickly when your gym is at risk.

Foam flooring is another option, yet unlike the rubber roll floors, you get a much more porous and saturation-susceptible choice. Water damage happening around this flooring might spread less quickly as the absorption volume is much higher. Flooring like high-grade foam has a higher porosity, which can require your business to remove and replace portions if they remain exposed to standing water or elevated moisture levels for too long. Foam is a less popular choice for many gyms because it can wear down more easily over time. SERVPRO can work with proprietors and insurance adjusters in calculating economic considerations for restoring or replacing fixtures including equipment along with structural installations.

No matter which flooring your gym chooses, you need to know how to respond to emergencies to protect your investments, employees, and your customers from what could happen. Our SERVPRO team has a 24/7 response to water loss incidents, deploying cutting-edge extractors and drying tools.  With truck-mounted extractors, wet vacs, riding Rovers, and portable gear, we can swiftly remove visible water. Then our skilled WRT water damage restoration technicians can strategically place air movers, axial fans, and a variety of dehumidifiers to restore the structure to its preloss condition. “Like it never even happened.”

While there are dozens of pressing concerns for any business owner contending with water losses, our SERVPRO of Aberdeen / Holmdel team can help. Our business is to keep you in business. Give us a call anytime disasters strike at (732) 290-3170.
